About Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument
The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument of Cuyahoga County is located at 3 Public Square, Cleveland, OH 44114, United States and it is Cleveland’s major Civil War monument, which honors the over 9,000 individuals from Cuyahoga County who served the Union throughout the war. The monument was dedicated on the 4th of July, 1894 after nearly 15 years of planning, and it is situated on the Public Square’s southeast quadrant in Downtown Cleveland. It was designed by Civil War veteran and architect, Levi Scofield, who is also the one responsible for creating the monument’s sculptures. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ monument is regularly open to the public, free of charge.
The interior of the monument consists of an elevated base which contains a tablet room. The elevated base is surmounted by a column capped with a Statue of Liberty that is 15 inches high, and this brings the total height of the structure to 125 inches. There are 4 groupings of bronze sculpture surrounding the exterior of the base with a cast approximately one-third larger than life, that depicts various battle scenes. These groupings of bronze sculpture represent the 4 main armed services – Navy, Infantry, Artillery and Cavalry. In Cleveland Ohio monument there are marble tablets along the outer walls of the tablet room and the names of the veterans from Cuyahoga County are engraved on these marble tablets. With around 40,000 visitors coming every year, the monument remains a popular attraction for both local residents and tourists.
