About Port of Cleveland

The Port of Cleveland is a container shipping and bulk freight port located at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. With a size of 144 sq mi (370 km²) and a draft depth of 27 ft (8.2 m), the Port of Cleveland is the third-largest port in the Great Lakes and the fourth-largest Great Lakes port by annual tonnage which is 15,186,819 as of the year 2006 with cargo value of $1 billion. It is owned by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority. The Port of Cleveland is the only container port on the Great Lakes that offers bi-weekly service between Cleveland and Antwerp and this is done on a service known as the Cleveland-Europe Express. Tied to the roughly 13 million tons of cargo that move through Cleveland Harbor every year are over 20,000 jobs and $3.5 billion in annual economic activity.

The Port of Cleveland is a very important site in Cleveland OH as it serves as the gateway to America’s Heartland and the premier international multimodal trade hub on the Great Lakes. Through the Port, a critical connection between Northeast Ohio and the global economy is guaranteed. Once a vessel being transported to the Port of Cleveland leaves the port of origin, it takes an all-water route across the Atlantic Ocean and through the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway system until finally it arrives at the Port of Cleveland.
