Historic Marker – “Old” Chardon
The “Old” Chardon Post Office Marker is a historical marker located in Chardon, Ohio which commemorates the site of the town’s first post office. The marker was dedicated in 1983 and is a popular tourist destination for those interested in the history of the region. It is maintained by the Ohio Historical Society and is open to the public for viewing at any time. The “Old” Chardon Post Office Marker is an important reminder of the town’s pioneering spirit and its commitment to preserving its heritage for future generations.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, this building was the post office from 1940 through 1986. It is a perfect example of the Colonial Revival style which was common in the 1930s and 1940s.
The marker is made of bronze and stands about four feet tall. It is set on a large granite base and includes a plaque that provides information about the history of the old post office and its importance to the community of County Seat of Cuyahoga County. The plaque reads: “Old Post Office Site.
The exterior brick work, large Palladian window, and simple design were common in the building plans for era post offices. This simplicity helped workers who were unskilled to be employed in public works projects. The building’s interior still has the original portico, wood and marble-paneled walls, terrazzo floors, and mailing lobby.
The first post office in Chardon was established in 1812 and operated out of a log cabin on this site. The post office served as a hub for mail delivery and became an important part of the community. The building was eventually replaced by a new post office in 1936, but the site remains an important reminder of the early history of Chardon.”
It was sponsored and developed by the New Deal Federal Works Agency. Congresswoman Frances P. Bolton was very useful in acquiring this post office for Chardon.
