The Historic District – Chardon Courthouse Square
The Chardon Courthouse Square District is a historic district located in Chardon, Northeast Ohio. The district includes a collection of buildings that date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it is centered around Chardon Square, a public park in the center of town.
The district is named after the iconic courthouse building located on Chardon Square. The courthouse was built in 1869 and opened in 1868 in the Gothic Revival and Italianate style of architecture and has served as the centerpiece of the Chardon Courthouse Square District for over a century. Together, the Gothic Revival and Italianate styles add to the rich architectural diversity of the Chardon Courthouse Square District, and their ornate details are a testament to the town’s commitment to preserving its unique history and character.
A Historical landmark can be defined as any improvement, building or structure of particular historic or architectural significance to the Town relating to its heritage, cultural, social, economic or political history, which have been listed or are eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In addition to the courthouse, the district includes numerous other historic buildings that reflect the development of the community over time. These include the 1878 Chardon Opera House, which has been restored and used for a variety of community events and performances.
The district covers the public green, the county courthouse and two blocks of commercial buildings on the west side of the public green. The green is divided into a north unit and a south unit with the Geauga County Courthouse in the north unit.
The Chardon Courthouse Square District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an important part of the town’s cultural and architectural heritage. The district was added to the National Register on 1974 October 18th with Reference Number: 74001502.
