Visiting President James Garfield Birthplace Cabin – Moreland Hills, OH
President James Garfield is known as the last of the log cabin presidents. His birthplace cabin is located in a municipal building complex at 4346-4426 OH-91, Moreland Hills, OH 44022, United States. It is clearly marked from the road, and there is plenty of parking in the lot.
In 1830, James Garfield’s parents bought a 50-acre plot of land 12 miles from Cleveland for $100, and built a 20 x 30 foot cabin, in which their son James, who would grow up to become the 20th president of the USA, and the last of the “log cabin” presidents, was born the following year. In Moreland Hills, OH, this cabin was his home for the next 28 years, though during this time he spent some years away at college. Garfield returned here to visit in 1880, and was elected as president later that year. He died in office in 1881, and the cabin burned down sometime after that. This replica was made in 1999, and sits next to the town hall in Moreland Hills, Ohio, near the actual site, which is in the woods behind the property.
Garfield’s original birthplace cabin is known to have been within walking distance from where the replica now stands. No images of his actual cabin exist either, but detailed journal entries about its dimensions and style do, which are the basis for this cabin. Near the cabin is a statue of Garfield and a few other placards explaining some historical significance. It is open to visitors only on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm.
